How to Be Sure Your Fish Has a Fungal Infection or Fin Rot

If your fish looks unhealthy with an eroded head or mouth and visible white, cotton wool-like fungal growths, it’s likely suffering from a fungal infection or fin rot. Additional symptoms include clamped fins, lack of energy, loss of appetite, and noticeable weight loss.

Step 1 – Treat Your Fish

  • Remove the carbon filter from your aquarium filtration during treatment. Remember to replace it 7 days after the last medication dose.
  • Use an effective Anti Fungus & Fin Rot treatment. Make sure to follow the correct dosage based on your aquarium size (check dosage guidelines here). Tip: Shake the treatment well before use for best results.
  • Add Aqualibrium First Aid Salt to strengthen your fish’s immune system and support recovery.
  • Allow your fish to rest and recover by avoiding excessive tank cleaning, rearranging decorations, or adding new fish during treatment.
  • Follow the instructions on the treatment packaging for re-treatment or additional care if needed.

⚠️ Important: Some treatments may lower oxygen levels in the aquarium. If you notice your fish gasping at the surface, increase oxygen supply by using an air pump or air stone.

Step 2 – Treat Your Aquarium

  • Always test your aquarium water for excessive ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH imbalances when your fish show signs of illness.
  • Address any water quality issues immediately to create a healthy environment and improve your fish’s chance of recovery.
  • Ensure all equipment like filters and heaters are working properly. Check your aquarium temperature with a thermometer.
  • Perform any necessary maintenance or replace faulty or broken equipment to maintain optimal tank conditions.
