Leeches and Crustacean parasites
How to Be Sure Your Fish Has Crustacean Parasites
Crustacean parasites are visible clinging to your fish’s skin, fins, or gills. The affected areas may appear sore or irritated, and your fish may exhibit rapid gill movement, often gasping or breathing heavily at the water surface. These parasites cause discomfort, making your fish flick, twitch, or jump as it tries to shake them off.
Step 1 – Treat Your Fish
- Remove the carbon filter from your aquarium filtration system during treatment, but remember to replace it 7 days after the last medication dose.
- Apply Anti Crustacean Parasite treatment, following the dosage instructions specific to your aquarium size (check dosage guidelines here). Note: Do not use this treatment with scaleless fish or invertebrates.
- Add Aqualibrium First Aid Salt to help boost your fish’s immune system and support recovery.
- Provide your fish with a calm environment—avoid excessive tank cleaning, rearranging decorations, or introducing new fish during treatment.
- Follow the product packaging for re-treatment or if additional treatment is necessary.
⚠️ Important: Some parasite treatments may reduce oxygen levels in your aquarium. If your fish are gasping at the surface, increase oxygen supply with an air pump or air stone.
Step 2 – Treat Your Aquarium Water
- Regularly test aquarium water parameters including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH levels, especially when fish show signs of illness.
- Address any water quality issues promptly to restore a healthy environment and improve your fish’s chances of recovery.
- Check all equipment such as filters and heaters to ensure proper function.
- Perform necessary maintenance or replace any faulty or broken parts to maintain optimal tank conditions.
By identifying crustacean parasites early and maintaining excellent water quality, you’ll help your fish recover quickly and keep your aquarium healthy.
