Internal bacterial infection

How to Be Sure Your Fish Has Internal Bacterial Infections

Internal bacterial infections can cause your fish’s stomach to appear bloated or unusually hollow. These infections often lead to inflammation of internal organs, making it difficult for your fish to eat and breathe properly. You may notice your fish gasping at the water surface and experiencing weight loss. Additional signs include ulcers, redness of fins and vent, and discoloration of the body. These symptoms indicate your fish is seriously unwell and requires prompt treatment.

Step 1 – Treat Your Fish

  • Remove the carbon filter from your aquarium’s filtration system before treatment, but remember to replace it 7 days after the last dose.
  • Use Anti Internal Bacteria treatment, following the correct dosage for your aquarium size (check dosage guidelines here).
  • Add Aqualibrium First Aid Salt to help boost your fish’s immune system and support recovery.
  • Provide your fish with a stress-free environment: avoid excessive cleaning, rearranging decorations, or introducing new fish during treatment.
  • Follow the treatment’s packaging instructions for any re-treatment or additional medication if needed.

⚠️ Warning: Some treatments may lower oxygen levels in your aquarium. If you observe fish gasping at the surface, increase oxygen supply by adding an air pump or air stone.

Step 2 – Maintain Healthy Aquarium Water

  • Regularly test your aquarium water for harmful levels of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH imbalance.
  • Take corrective action to rebalance water quality, ensuring the best environment for your fish to recover.
  • Inspect all aquarium equipment, especially filters and heaters, to confirm they are functioning properly.
  • Perform necessary maintenance or replace faulty equipment to maintain optimal tank conditions.

Providing quick and proper treatment along with maintaining excellent water quality will give your fish the best chance to overcome internal bacterial infections and regain health.
