How to Identify and Manage Viral Infections in Aquarium Fish

Viral infections in fish often cause white, grey, or pink waxy growths and tiny bumps on the fins or skin. While these infections are generally not life-threatening, they can make your fish feel weak and stressed. Since viral infections cannot be treated directly with medication, supportive care is essential to help your fish recover and stay healthy.

Step 1 – Support Your Fish During Viral Infections

  1. Remove Carbon Filter – Take out the carbon from your filtration system before treatment, as it can absorb medications. Remember to replace it 7 days after the last dose.
  2. Use Disease Away Treatment – Apply the correct dosage for your aquarium size to support your fish’s immune system and help them fight the infection.
    Note: Do not use Disease Away with scaleless fish or invertebrates.
  3. Add Aqualibrium First Aid Salt – This boosts your fish’s natural defenses and promotes recovery.
  4. Minimize Stress – Allow your fish to recover by avoiding excessive tank cleaning, rearranging decorations, or introducing new fish.
  5. Follow Re-treatment Guidelines – If needed, repeat treatment according to the instructions on the packaging.

⚠️ Caution: Some treatments may reduce oxygen levels. If your fish are gasping at the surface, increase oxygen by adding an air pump or air stone.

Step 2 – Maintain a Healthy Aquarium Environment

  1. Regular Water Testing – Frequently test your aquarium water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH imbalances to detect and prevent water quality issues.
  2. Correct Unhealthy Water Parameters – Use water conditioners and treatments to restore safe water conditions.
  3. Inspect Equipment – Check that filters, heaters, and aeration systems are working properly.
  4. Perform Routine Maintenance – Fix or replace broken equipment and maintain a clean, stable environment for your fish.

  • Quarantine new fish before adding them to your main tank
  • Maintain excellent water quality with regular testing and water changes
