How to Identify and Treat Crustacean Parasites on Aquarium Fish

Crustacean parasites can often be seen clinging to your fish’s gills, causing irritation and damage. The affected areas may appear sore or inflamed, and your fish will likely show signs of distress such as rapid gill movement, gasping at the water surface, and increased breathing effort. To try to remove these parasites, your fish may flick, twitch, or jump repeatedly.

Step 1 – Treat Your Fish for Crustacean Parasites

  1. Remove Carbon from Your Filter – Carbon absorbs medication, so take it out before treatment and replace it 7 days after the final dose.
  2. Use Anti Crustacean Parasite Treatment – Treat your fish with a proven anti crustacean parasite medication, using the correct dosage for your aquarium size. ⚠️ Important: Do not use this treatment with scaleless fish or invertebrates.
  3. Add Aqualibrium First Aid Salt – This helps boost your fish’s immune system, promoting faster recovery.
  4. Reduce Stress – Avoid excessive tank cleaning, rearranging, or introducing new fish while your fish recover.
  5. Follow Re-treatment Instructions – If necessary, reapply treatment or address other problems according to the product guidelines.

⚠️ Watch out: Some parasite treatments can lower oxygen levels in your tank. If your fish are gasping at the surface, increase oxygenation by adding an air pump or air stone.

  1. Test Your Aquarium Water – Regularly check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH levels with a reliable test kit.
